2018 Spring Chess Championship Tournaments

March and April are full of opportunities to play chess.  Local tournaments abound. Here are the highlights (links to register are in the title of each tournament).

Spring Blitz Scholastic Tournament - March 4th


Game: 5 min; Double Swiss; 6 rounds

Where:  Rainbow Elementary, 50 Nance Rd., Madison, AL  35758

When:  Sunday March 4, 2018

              1:30 p.m.

Player Meeting:  1:15 p.m.

Memberships:  USCF membership is required to play in this rated tournament.  Tournament will affect player's Blitz rating only.

Entry Fee:  $20 for MCCL members; $25 for non-members (savings for MCCL members will appear after you add the tournament to your cart)

Awards:  1st-5th place medals and Top Female medal

Deadline to register online:  March 2, 2018.  No on-site registration available.

Madison City Kindergarten Tournament - March 4th


Game: 20 min per side; 5 rounds if time permits

Who:  Any kindergarten student (limited to the first 20 who register online)

Where:  Rainbow Elementary, 50 Nance Rd., Madison, AL  35758

When:  Sunday March 4, 2018

              2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Player Meeting:  1:45 p.m. Rainbow Library Media Center

Memberships:  No memberships are required; for both rated and non-rated kindergarten students; this will be a non-rated tournament and great practice for the Kindergarten section of the Madison City Chess Championship!

Entry Fee:  $20 for MCCL members; $25 for non-members (savings for MCCL members will appear after you add the tournament to your cart)

Awards:  All players receive a medal; awards ceremony will occur at approximately 5 p.m.

Deadline to register online:  March 2, 2018 or until filled (limited to 20 students).  No on-site registration available.

2018 City Chess Championship - April 13-14


A grade-level championship for Madison residents and those attending Madison City Schools

Sponsored by Systems Products Solutions, Inc.

In 2018, Madison City will expand the levels and amounts of awards by conducting its first Grade-Level City Chess Championship!  That means we will crown a chess champion for each grade level K-12.  There is no need to qualify.  The City Chess Championship now becomes an open championship where anyone can register to compete by grade level.  Awards will be presented at 7 p.m. to the top 3 finishers in each grade level.  Each City Champion in grades K-2nd will receive a $50 prize.  Each City Champion in grades 3rd-12th will receive a $100 prize.

You must register in your grade level.  The tournament is open to any competitor in grades K-12, but one must reside  within Madison City limits or attend Madison City Schools to be eligible to win and be declared City Chess Champion for their grade level.

Membership:  USCF membership is required.

Location:  James Clemens High School, 11306 County Line Road,  Madison  AL  35756.

Registration Fee: $20 for MCCL members; $25 for non-members (reduced price will appear after you add to your shopping cart).

Schedule:  Note: School is out half-day on Friday, April 13th.

Jr High and High School grades Game 90/d5; 4 rounds; starts Friday (4/13) at 6 p.m. Sat. rounds: 9:00-12:15 - 3:30 
Elementary (4th-6th) grades Game 60/d5, 4 rounds; starts Saturday. Round times: 9:00–11:30–2:00-4:30
Primary (K-3rd) grades Game 45/d5, 4 rounds; starts Saturday. Round times:  9:30 - 11:15 - 1:00 - 2:45

Awards at 7 pm.

 Time Control and Rounds:

K-12: Game 45/d5 (4SS)

9:00, 11:00, 1:30, 3:30

 K-6 & K-3: Game 30/d5 (5SS)

9:30, 11:00, 12:45, 2:15, 3:30

Teams: Top 3 individual scores from the same school in each section will comprise the team score. Public, private and home school students welcome.

Entry Fee:

$25 by Friday April 20th$50 by Wednesday April 25th; no onsite registration

Individual Prizes

Trophies for 1st-5th place and medals for all who tie for 5th place in each section.

 NGTOC:  The K-12 Champion will represent Alabama at the National Girls Tournament of Champions (NGTOC)
