Back to School Chess Events - 2016
Get ready chess kids! There are numerous things for you to do to get back into the swing of playing chess right before school starts. First, we hope you are working on your chesskid levels using your chesskid.com accounts. Those who have achieved a King Level 19 or higher will be added to an MCS Kings Club online.
There are other events happening around the start of school that you will want to be aware of. Some require registration.
MCCL Bughouse Night – Monday July 25th – 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. – Rainbow Elementary
MCCL meets every Monday night at the Hogan Family YMCA in Madison from 6:30 – 8:00 p.m. except for holidays and special occasions. However, our last summer meeting is Bughouse Night for members only. It is easy to join MCCL—learn more here. We have been practicing Bughouse chess all month to get ready for the ultimate Bughouse tournament Monday July 25th. If you have already registered, come to Rainbow Elementary located at 50 Nance Rd. in Madison as early as 5:30 p.m. to warm up. Or you can register onsite at 5:30 p.m. if you are an MCCL member.
Girls Chess Night at Madison Taziki’s – Tuesday July 28th at 6-7 p.m.
Girls Chess Night resumed its summer meetings at Taziki’s, and it continues to be a favorite gathering. Bring your chess sets and play chess with other girls in the area. Keep up with all the latest on Girls Chess Night here.
August 1st – Open House at all Madison Elementary Schools – No MCCL Tonight
Be sure to join your school chess club at Open House. Because Open House at all elementary schools in Madison is on a Monday night, MCCL will not meet at the YMCA on August 1st.
August 2nd – ChessKid Night
The first Tuesday of the month means one thing—ChessKid Night! Log on to chesskid.com at 6 p.m. from wherever you are and play Fast Chess games with other kids from Madison. Learn more here.
August 2nd – MCCL Spirit Night at Madison Taziki’s from 5-8 p.m.
Who wants to cook the night before school starts? NOBODY!. So come to Taziki’s at 105 Brookridge Drive in Madison. This is the second back-to-school Madison City Chess League Spirit Night, and Taziki’s will donate 10% of their sales to MCCL. Be sure to tell the person at the counter that you are there to support MCCL when you place your order. Wear your MCCL shirts!
Since it is also ChessKid night, bring your iPads or tablets and log on to play chess while you eat.
August 3rd – First Day of School
August 8th – MCCL resumes at the YMCA at 6:30 p.m.

August 11th - LMS Chess Team Tryouts - after school at LMS
Chess Team tryouts for the 2016-17 school year will be on Thursday, August 11th from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in Coach Blankenship's classroom #105. Head Coach for the LMS Chess Team will be Paul Mulqueen. Practices will start on Monday Aug. 15th after school in Coach Blankenship's classroom. Information about tryout procedures and an application can be found here. Complete the application and turn into Ms. Avans no later than Monday, August 8, 2016. No payment is due until you have been informed you have made the team. Payment due at first practice on Monday, Aug. 15th.
August 12th - DMS Chess Team Tryouts - 5:30 p.m. at DMS
Chess Team tryouts for the 2016-17 school year will be on Friday, August 12th at 5:30 p.m. For more information about tryouts and to download registration forms, follow this link. Head Coach for the DMS Chess Team will be Bill Nash. The first practice will be Friday, Aug. 19th at 5:00-6:30 p.m. No payment is due until you have been informed you have been selected for the chess team. Turn your forms into Ms. Julie Goldston the first week of school.
August 16th - Girls Chess Night - Rainbow Elementary - 6-7 p.m.
Our Girls Chess Night program launches for the 2016-17 school year at Rainbow Elementary located at 50 Nance Road in Madison. Each month Girls Chess Night goes on a tour of Madison Schools. We are looking forward to the girls getting to play in the outdoor chess classroom at Rainbow. Read more about the schedule here. Tonight’s special guest is Mayor Troy Trulock who will have a special announcement to make. Don’t be late.
Summer Knights Chess Tournament – Saturday August 27th – Heritage Elementary
Whether you are a first-time tournament player or an experienced one, this tournament is just for you! Both rated and non-rated sections are available. The Open section of the rated tournament will also be the first qualifier for the 2017 City Chess Championship! Follow this link to learn more and register online. In the past, we have held the Summer Knights chess tournament at the end of summer chess camp at Rainbow. This year we are waiting for school to start and holding it at Heritage Elementary located at 11775 County Line Road in Madison.
