First Annual City Chess Championship

Bob Jones High School was the location for the 2016 City Chess Championship, the first annual city-wide chess tournament for Madison's most talented chess players in grades K-12.  The event was sponsored by Systems Products and Solutions, Inc.  Mayor Troy Trulock welcomed all competitors who had qualified to compete in the Championship section during the school year.  Competitors had to be Madison residents and finish 1st or 2nd in one of five qualifying tournaments.

And the 2016 City Chess Champions are . . . 

Zachary Calinsky - Primary School

Om Badhe - Elementary School

Michael Guthrie - Junior High School

Grace Billmann - High School



Each champion received a crystal award and a check for $100.


Championship Section Results


Primary (K-3) Section

1st place - Zachary Calinsky (Rainbow)

2nd place - Karsten Wallace (Rainbow)

3rd place - Oviya Gowder (Heritage)

Also competing in this section:  Geon Park, Vallabh Busetty, Luke Chynoweth, Chris Zheng, Caroline Wang, Corinne Wilhelm, and Alex Povorozniuc.


Elementary (4-6) Section 

1st place - Om Badhe (Mill Creek))

2nd place - Will Fox (Madison)

3rd place - Aubteen Pour-Biazar (West Madison)

Also competing in this section:  Jenson Wilhelm, Edward Calinsky, Victor Lundy, Maanasi Limaye, Constance Wang, Abhishek Emani, and Puja Chopade.


Junior High (7-8) Section

1st place - Michael Guthrie (DMS)

2nd place - Josh Lin (DMS)

3rd place - Lawrence Zhang (LMS)

Also competing in this section:  Will Bao, Alex Edwards, Carson Boland, William Spanier, Hayden Billmann, and Erin Kueck.


High School (9-12) Section

1st place - Grace Billmann (BJ)



Open Section Results

An Open Section also was established allowing anyone in grades K-12 to register to compete using the longer time control of Game 90 minutes with a 5 second delay.  The tournament was designed by the Madison City Chess League to help Madison students prepare for the National chess tournament season that uses longer time controls.  Here are the results in the Open Section:


K-3rd Section

Top Female - Sahithi Mynampally

4th-6th Section

1st - place - Mohak Agarwalla

2nd place - Pranav Somu
