Madison Elementary at 17 College Street is the location for this year's Learn to Play Chess Night, a free event sponsored by the Madison City Chess League to help students K-12 learn how to play chess.  Chess coaches Noel Newquist and Undrea Randolph will lead the instruction.  Parents are welcome to stay and learn how to play chess with their child or attend a Parent Meeting in the Library with MCCL Executive Director Ranae Bartlett who will show parents how to help kids develop their chess skills online and in the Madison community.

Students will not only be guided by our experienced chess instructors, but they also will be seated opposite a volunteer student chess coach who knows how to play chess.  Your child will learn how to set up a board, what the pieces are called and how they move.  Your child will get to play games with a student chess coach using some and then all of the chess pieces.  Learn to Play Chess Night is from 6-7:30 p.m.

Students 10 years and older who know how to play chess can volunteer to be a student chess coach for the evening.  All volunteers need to arrive at 5:30 p.m.

You must pre-register in order to participate as a volunteer or a student who wants to learn to play chess.  In order to insure every student learner will be paired with a student volunteer coach, no on-site or walk-in registration will be available.  Register online here.
