Second Annual MCCL Challenge

January 19th, 12:00AM

The second annual MCCL Challenge occurred on January 13, 2016 at Madison City Schools Central Office.  Fourteen brave business and community leaders accepted the challenge from our kids age 10 and and younger to play a chess match.  There was just one catch--if a kid beat the adult, the adult would donate to the Madison City Chess League.  The match was very close this year, but the kids prevailed 8-6.  Most of the adults donated anyway--win, lose or draw.  It was a lot of fun for all ages.

City Council President Tim Holcombe acted as Master of Ceremonies, and the match was supervised by Senior Tournament Director for the United States Chess Federation and National FIDE Arbiter, Bill Nash.  WHNT News-19 reporter David Kumbroch returned for a second year and covered the event on his news program.  You can see the story here.

We would like to thank all of the participants and sponsors.

How is one selected to play in the MCCL Challenge?

Adults who were willing to accept the challenge registered online.  Sometimes a business sponsored their participation, and sometimes the adults made individual donations.  Parents of students also registered for an opportunity for their child to be selected.  Priority was given to MCCL members who joined or renewed their membership by the registration deadline.  If a business sponsor had some connection to students at a particular school, then students at that school had greater representation.  Students from six of the seven elementary schools in Madison were eventually selected to play.  If your child is interested in participating in next year's MCCL Challenge, it is recommended that you renew your MCCL membership by January 2017.  Helping MCCL find a business sponsor for the event also increases one's chances of being selected to play. We want to thank everyone for their support.
