The Madison City Chess League (MCCL) is excited to announce a new summer chess camp format this year focused on competitive chess players. For the first time, we will offer a full day camp that will serve lunch for our higher rated players.  We will also offer a half-day camp for students who are beginning to learn to compete at chess and need instruction at a specific level and for those who want to learn to play chess.  MCCL members who are Lifetime members or who have renewed their annual membership for 2017 will be given priority and an opportunity to register first for summer camp.  With our new format and outstanding instructors, we want to be sure that those who support MCCL with their membership dues have the first chance to secure a spot.  MCCL members will be sent a link to register early via email.  Registration will open to the general public and non-members on March 20th.

Learn to Play Chess Camp - Half-Day Camp - $125

Monday-Friday 1-4 p.m.

The MCCL Summer Camp also will offer a Learn to Play Chess Camp for students who want to learn to play chess.  Students will be taught how the pieces move, point values, and basic rules.  They will receive a workbook that they can take home at the end of the week.  This will be a half-day camp that will meet after lunch from 1-4 p.m.  The Instructor for Learn to Play Chess Camp will be Ed Mullin, coach for the Madison and West Madison Elementary chess teams.

BEGINNING COMPETITION CHESS CAMP - Half-Day Camp  -$150

Monday-Friday 8:30-11:30 a.m.

(For students who know how to play chess, have completed the Learn to Play Chess Class, and are unrated or have a USCF rating of 400 or below)

Beginning Competition Chess Camp returns as a half-day camp taught by Bill Nash, USCF Senior Tournament Director and FIDE Arbiter and coach for Bob Jones and Discovery Middle School Chess teams.  This year we are inviting those who are unrated but would like to learn how to compete in tournaments to join those who have competed in chess tournaments with a USCF rating below 400.  Younger students in particular will perform better in a half-day camp format.  We have had many students introduced to competitive chess this spring with the many tournaments offered by the Madison City Chess League and the State Scholastic Chess Championship occurring here in Madison.  Many of our students have only felt comfortable competing in non-rated sections.  This camp is ideal for those who have begun competing and want to improve.  There will be an emphasis on fundamentals of chess, pattern recognition, using chess clocks and time management, and chess notation.

COMPETITION CHESS CAMP SCHEDULE -  Full Day Camp - New!

(For students with a USCF rating above 400; students will be subdivided into three groups who will rotate through all instructors.)

Monday-Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. with lunch served ($350)

This summer, MCCL is excited to offer a full immersion chess camp where kids can literally play chess and learn how to improve from the morning into the evening with special optional activities planned when the camp day ends.  When students register for the camp, they will be given the opportunity to vote on the evening activities they are most interested in, and the events will be announced before camp begins.

Instructors for Full Day Competition Camp

Campers are in for a treat with our new full-day format where they will rotate to each instructor's class, play in a week-long tournament and receive feedback on their games.  Lunch will be provided, but campers can choose to bring their own lunch if they prefer.  Fee is $350.  Returning this year to Summer Chess Camp is International Master Daniel Rensch who shares, “Every time you’re in Madison you get the feeling you’re a part of something special. The energy, love and commitment the community, both student and teacher, are giving to the game of chess is second to none. The environment truly gives me nostalgia about my chess playing years, and I am grateful to contribute to the growth of Madison’s young chess minds in any way I can!"
