One of the biggest transitions for our elementary students entering middle school is that chess team is not just a club one signs up for. In Madison middle and high schools, chess teams are competition teams that train weekly, and one must tryout and make the team in order to compete for the school. Tryout information is contained below. Middle school students have the option of registering for chess elective classes during the day whether they make the chess team or not.

To tryout, students complete an application form that provides various information about USCF rating, online work to improve chess skills, and tournament participation from the previous year. A simultaneous match occurs with a chess master to evaluate skill and concentration. The coaches review the information submitted as well as results form the simul before making a final decision on who makes the team.

High School Chess Clubs

Both Bob Jones and James Clemens High Schools offer students the opportunity to join Chess Club at their schools. The Bob Jones HS Chess Club sponsor is Mr. Mack, and the James Clemens HS Chess Club sponsor is Ms. Simons. Both clubs are service organizations affiliated with the Madison City Chess League (MCCL), a non-profit organization that helps teach kids how to play chess and develop chess skills. Chess Club members are required to perform 4 service hours per semester or 8 service hours per year. The service hours must be related to promoting chess in the community. In addition, Chess Club members must all participate in a group project that promotes chess in the community. The annual group project is selected by the members. During the MCCL Annual Dinner, Chess Club members will share details about the group project they selected.

Chess Club is distinct from competition chess team with different requirements. One does not have to be selected for the competition chess team to participate in Chess Club.
