MCCL is going to Disney World!

The Madison City Chess League is planning to put its resources behind supporting our middle and high school students who are competing at the National K-12 Chess Championship in Orlando.  Later in May 2018, MCCL also will support our elementary students who will compete at the National Elementary Chess Championship in Nashville.  For National K12, MCCL will be coordinating a charter bus to take students from Discovery and Liberty Middle Schools and Bob Jones and James Clemens High Schools.  The bus will depart early Thursday morning on December 7th and will return on Tuesday December 12th in the evening.  Some students may decide to make separate travel arrangements but still compete at this tournament.  Our goal will be to have 3 students from each grade level compete for a school team.

National K-12, also referred to as Grade Nationals, is one of the most challenging national tournaments our kids will face.  Kids compete for three days (Friday through Sunday) in 7 rounds where the time control for each game is 90 minutes per side.  Each grade level presents some of the highest rated competitors one will ever face during the year.

MCCL is arranging bus transportation for the middle and high schools because Grade Nationals occurs at a time that is better for our older students' schedules.  The National High School tournament in late April 2018 will be in Columbus, Ohio and occurs while students are preparing for AP exams.  National Junior High is earlier in April in Atlanta, and could offer an opportunity for both elementary and middle school students to compete, but we do not know how many Madison students will be able to work that into their busy spring schedules.  MCCL will wait closer to that event to determine whether it can provide resources to support that tournament.

MCCL plans to conduct some fundraisers to help pay for the cost of transportation and lodging for our coaches and sponsors as well as our students.  Even with the assistance of fundraisers, each person traveling in the team bus will likely need to pay a fee of $100 to reserve their seat.  More information will be provided to middle and high school chess team members after they conduct tryouts in August.

Other elementary schools also may want to compete at Grade Nationals in December and are encouraged to do so. If enough elementary students also want to compete, then MCCL will look for additional coaches who can attend.
