2017 Winter Knights - 8 More Qualify for City Chess Championship!

The 2017 Winter Knights Scholastic Chess Championship welcomed over 100 students to Columbia Elementary on Saturday January 14th to compete in both Rated and Non-Rated sections.  The Rated section offered students the opportunity to play with a longer time control of 60 minutes with 5-second delay per side.  The Chief Tournament Director for Winter Knights was FM Bradley Denton.  The Madison City Chess League offers three tournaments during the school year where students can compete with longer time controls in preparation for Nationals where the time control is two hours per side.

4th Qualifier for City Chess Championship

Eight more students qualified for the City Chess Championship at the conclusion of the tournament.  They are pictured L to R below:  K-3 Section--Nicholas Koukos and Ethan Van; 4th-6th Section--Rishi Sethuraj and Ethan Kueck; 7th-8th Section--Maanasi Limaye and Aubteen Pour-Biazar; and 9th-12th Section--Hugh Mitchell and Erin Kueck.  The last Qualifier for the City Chess Championship will be the Rookie Rally at Blossomwood Elementary on January 28th.  Online registration is available for early registrants until Wednesday, January 25th here.




Rated Section Results

The Rated section of Winter Knights mirrored the sections in the upcoming City Chess Championship.  In the K-3 section, award winners were:  Xavier Bruni (1st), Caroline Wang (2nd), Nicholas Koukos (3rd), Ethan Van (4th), Sahithi Mynampally (5th), Laya Gowder (6th), and Isabelle Park (top female).  In the 4th-6th grade section, award winners were:  Ethan Xu (1st), Shreya Sunil (2nd), Victor Lundy (3rd), Ethan Kueck (4th), Rishi Sethuraj (5th), Henry Holland (6th), and Rachael Ehrman (top female).  The 7th-8th grade section award winners were:  Jenson Wilhelm (1st), Will Cox (2nd), Will Fox (3rd), Aubteen Pour-Biazar (4th), Constance Wang (5th & top female), and Maanasi Limaye (6th).  Finally, the 9th-12th grade section award winners were:  Hugh Mitchell (1st), Mark Skrabanek (2nd), Erin Kueck (3rd and top female), and Grace Billmann (4th).



Non-Rated Section Results

The Non-Rated section offered students in grades K-12 the opportunity to try a first tournament, and it is always exciting to see new students introduced to competitive chess.  The first place winners in each age group won four out of five points:  Hudson O'Neill (Non-rated K-12); Mitchell Bridgeforth (Non-rated K-6); and Mark Allison (Non-rated K-3).

MCCL Annual Meeting

The Madison City Chess League held its Annual Meeting to elect officers on January 14th at 12:45 p.m. during the Winter Knights Tournament. The Nominating Committee unanimously recommended the following Board Slate to the membership:  Bill Nash (President), Bradley Wallace (Vice-President), Mollie Bounds (Secretary), and Monica Wilhelm (Treasurer). The MCCL members unanimously accepted and approved the recommendation of the Nominating Committee. You can read more about the Board here.
