Congratulations 2020 City Chess Champions!

Thank you to James Clemens High School for serving as host for the 2020 City Chess Championship that occurred on March 6th-7th. We used three different time controls to help our kids learn to play longer games as they will during Nationals. The 7th-12th grade sections started their first round on Friday night with a time control of Game 90/d5. Chief Tournament Director Todd Guthrie noted that the longer time control led to better chess being played. The 4th-6th grade sections used a time control of Game 60/d5 while the K-3 sections used a time control of Game 45/d5 completing their rounds on Saturday. The awards ceremony occurred at 7 p.m on Saturday evening recognizing the top three finishers in each grade level. Group photo credit: Scott Wilhelm.

Thank you to our sponsor for the last five years, Ms. Nilmini Thompson and Systems Products and Solutions, Inc. Ms. Thompson supported this event at its inception and was able to help us hand out awards to all the city champions. Also present during the awards ceremony was Madison City Schools Interim Superintendent Eric Terrell. This is the only scholastic chess tournament in Alabama that awards a cash prize for those who finish 1st, and it is the only grade-level chess championship in Alabama. We were thrilled to have kids from Pre-K to 12th grade participate this year.
