HALLOWEEN TOURNAMENT A HIT!

The Madison City Chess League made history on Halloween hosting its first outdoor chess tournament on the new turf field at Madison City Schools Stadium. 77 students registered to play in both rated and non-rated sections. Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols opened the tournament declaring, "It's Chess time in Madison City!"

Although a Quick Rating was established for many, the tournament itself was only one part of a joyful day for the entire chess family. Beautiful weather and music from Harry Potter greeted participants as they entered the stadium. Candy prizes and Halloween medals were awarded with special contests in between each round of the tournament. The Halloween Dance-Off was a highlight and allowed us to see some impressive moves. Kids also enjoyed running around in the end zone while families sat in their lawn chairs on the edge of the field.

Complete tournament results can be found here in tie-break order. The USCF tournament report for the Rated sections can be found here

Best Chess-Themed Costume

BEST CHESS-THEMED COSTUME

We had a celebrity panel of judges help us select the Best Chess-Themed Costume. Superintendent Dr. Ed Nichols, Assistant Superintendent Eric Terrell, and District 2 City Councilwoman-Elect Connie Spears had the tough task of choosing a winner. There were some very creative entries like "Shark-Mate" as well as some great Kings, Queens, Bishops and Knights. At the end of the day Queen Cora Newberry won the top prize!
Heartfelt Thanks

HEARTFELT THANKS

Chess parents surprised Mrs. Bartlett with a basket full of goodies, gifts, and cards to say thank you for ten years on the school board and wishing her well as she transitions to City Council. Volunteers helped set up the stadium and clean up after the event was over. Mrs. Bartlett announced that she will continue organizing chess activities through the Madison City Chess League including the upcoming State Scholastic Chess Championship in March at BJHS. Thanks to everyone who helped make Halloween extra special!
