2021 State Scholastic Chess Championship Report

MADISON TEAMS SHINE AT 2021 STATE SCHOLASTIC CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP!
The Alabama Chess Federation hosted the 2021 State Scholastic Chess Championship online on ChessKid.com March 27 & 28. Our Madison teams have been practicing online all year to help prepare for this event. A big thank you to all our coaches who adjusted and conducted virtual practices. Although our kids are looking forward to returning to playing chess over-the-board, they have done an outstanding job adjusting to online play. They have a lot to be proud of!
PRIMARY (K-3) CHAMPIONS
Our youngest players dominated during the State Scholastic Championship with Kylie Zou winning the individual primary title, Rainbow Elementary winning the Primary school team championship, and MCCL tying for first as co-champions in the Primary club division. The top 5 individuals won a trophy, with medals going to anyone who tied for 5th while the top 3 teams won team trophies.
Kylie Zou - Primary Individual ChampionHorizon Elementary second grader Kylie Zou won 1st place in the Primary individual championship on Saturday with a perfect score of 5 pts. Her sister, Alice, won 3rd place with a score of 4 pts. Esteban Jerez won 4th place, and Jimmy McHugh won 5th place. Tying for 5th and winning a medal was Esinam Tettey. In the Primary Under 300 division, Mason Park tied for 5th place. | Rainbow Elementary - Primary School Team ChampionsRainbow Green team members Dennis Lenski, Emory Howell, Cora Newberry and Annabelle Hsu won 1st place in the school division. Columbia Elementary team members Daksh Sunil, Mason Park, Vedanth Siva, and Carter Bae won 2nd place, and Heritage Elementary team members Andrew Tkach, Anish Vaderevu, Shrabin Bista, and Saisha Iyer won 3rd place team. | MCCL - Primary Club Team Co-ChampionsMCCL entered a primary team of Kylie Zou, Esteban Jerez, Alice Zou, and Margaret Lin which tied for first in the primary club division. |
ELEMENTARY (K-6) CO-CHAMPIONS
For the sixth consecutive year, Rainbow Elementary won the team chess championship. It came down to the final round when Rainbow Blue team was leading Rainbow Red team and had to play each other. Rainbow Red won the final round, and Altamont sneaked in to tie and share the title as co-champions. Rainbow is coached by Will Stevenson. Sponsors are Brittany Wilson and Maria Adams.

JR HIGH (K-9) CHAMPIONS
For the fifth consecutive year, Discovery Middle School won the Jr High Chess Championship. They accomplished this with a perfect team score. DMS Chess Team is coached by Michael Guthrie, and their sponsor is Julie Goldston.
Discovery Middle - Jr High ChampionsDiscovery Middle School Teal team members Xavier Bruni, Steven Pan, Nirvana Rajbhandari, and Caleb Chen won 1st place in the Jr High School division. Pizitz won 2nd place and Bayside won 3rd. | Jr High Championship - Individual WinnersXavier Bruni won 4th place, Andrew Yang won 5th place, and Nirvana Rajbhandari tied for 5th place. | Jr High Under 1100 - Individual WinnersThere was a five-way tie for first place in the Under 1100 section. Joseph Park tied for 1st with 4/5 pts. Isabelle Park narrowly missed a medal scoring 3.5 pts. |
HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONS
For the first time in school history, James Clemens High School won the High School Chess Team Championship. Congratulations to Coach Gerald Larson, chess sponsor Tammy Simons, and the JCHS team!

Rachael Ehrman won 4th place. Tying for 5th place was Kennedy Gore. |
