MADISON TEAMS SHINE AT 2021 STATE SCHOLASTIC CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP!

The Alabama Chess Federation hosted the 2021 State Scholastic Chess Championship online on ChessKid.com March 27 & 28. Our Madison teams have been practicing online all year to help prepare for this event. A big thank you to all our coaches who adjusted and conducted virtual practices. Although our kids are looking forward to returning to playing chess over-the-board, they have done an outstanding job adjusting to online play. They have a lot to be proud of!

PRIMARY (K-3) CHAMPIONS

Our youngest players dominated during the State Scholastic Championship with Kylie Zou winning the individual primary title, Rainbow Elementary winning the Primary school team championship, and MCCL tying for first as co-champions in the Primary club division. The top 5 individuals won a trophy, with medals going to anyone who tied for 5th while the top 3 teams won team trophies.

ELEMENTARY (K-6) CO-CHAMPIONS

For the sixth consecutive year, Rainbow Elementary won the team chess championship. It came down to the final round when Rainbow Blue team was leading Rainbow Red team and had to play each other. Rainbow Red won the final round, and Altamont sneaked in to tie and share the title as co-champions. Rainbow is coached by Will Stevenson. Sponsors are Brittany Wilson and Maria Adams.

JR HIGH (K-9) CHAMPIONS

For the fifth consecutive year, Discovery Middle School won the Jr High Chess Championship. They accomplished this with a perfect team score. DMS Chess Team is coached by Michael Guthrie, and their sponsor is Julie Goldston.

HIGH SCHOOL CHAMPIONS

For the first time in school history, James Clemens High School won the High School Chess Team Championship. Congratulations to Coach Gerald Larson, chess sponsor Tammy Simons, and the JCHS team!
