MCCL Team Cup Championship Is Coming This Fall!

The Madison City Chess League awarded its first traveling Team Cup Championship trophy at the 2017 MCCL Annual Dinner.  The winning team was from Liberty Middle School.  Team members were Om Badhe, Will Fox, Sohan Mynampally, and LJ Saurman.  Coach was Paul Mulqueen and Bradley Denton.

The Team Cup Championship was played over several weeks where top rated teams from across Madison competed in four-person teams using match-point scoring.  MCCL utilized Varsity and Junior Varsity designations for teams to compete, but only the Varsity winning team would take home the MCCL Team Cup.  The coaches found that the kids who would be competing in the State Scholastic Chess Championship benefited greatly from the Team Cup matches which were not rated, but allowed kids to practice playing in the four-person match point scoring format.

Who Will Win the MCCL Team Cup for 2018?

The competition is wide open as new middle and high school students join teams at Discovery, Liberty and Bob Jones.  James Clemens also will compete for the Team Cup this year as the chess team will be practicing during Refuel at noon on Mondays with Coach Paul Mulqueen.  Each school is encouraged to form multiple four-person teams to give as many the opportunity to practice this format before the State Scholastic Team Championship in the spring.

MCCL will utilize a new format this year for both Varsity and Junior Varsity categories.  Varsity teams will be comprised of middle and high school teams.  Junior Varsity teams will be comprised of K-3 and K-6 teams from elementary schools.  In elementary, students in K-3 can play up on a K-6 team.  The Coaches and Sponsors for each school team have the sole discretion regarding who makes a four-person team and how many four-person teams to enter in either Varsity or Junior Varsity categories.  It is an honor to be selected to represent your school on either a Varsity or Junior Varsity team.

There is no team fee to enter the Team Cup Championship.  New this year:  In order to be placed on a team to participate in the MCCL Team Cup Championship, one must be an MCCL member.  If you are not an MCCL member, join now.

Varsity Teams - Middle and High School players

The Varsity Team Championship will be determined this year during the Queen's Quest tournament at Mill Creek Elementary on November 18th.  The Middle and High School Varsity teams will play a four-round tournament with a Game 45/d5 time control in the library.  This will not be a rated event for our middle and high school four-person teams, but the Team Cup is on the line.

Awards:  The winning team in the Varsity section will be awarded the MCCL Team Cup at the conclusion of Queen’s Quest and a plate inscribed on the trophy in January of each year. The MCCL Team Cup will remain on display in the school of the winning team until the following Queen’s Quest tournament in November when it will be awarded to the winning Varsity team.

Deadline to Submit Teams:  Friday October 6th to mccl.director@gmail.com

Alternates:  You are encouraged to name an alternate who will move up to 4th board if any team member cannot compete on a scheduled date.  Your alternate cannot be a player named to one of your teams competing in the Team Championship.

Junior Varsity Teams - Elementary School players

The Junior Varsity portion of the MCCL Team Championship will occur on designated dates and locations in October and November before Queen's Quest.  We moved the dates to the fall semester to help our kids prepare for the National K12 Chess Championship in December.

Awards:  The winning teams and top female teams in the Junior Varsity K3 and K6 sections will receive medals.  The winning Varsity and Junior Varsity teams will be recognized at the MCCL Annual Dinner in May.
