Girls Chess Night A Success!

The Madison City Chess League launched its Girls Chess Night program in June 2015, and is very pleased with the response.  Over 20 girls showed up on the first night at Taziki’s Mediterranean Café in Madison.  MCCL Executive Director Ranae Bartlett was thrilled to meet girls in the area for the first time who were interested in playing chess with other girls.  There is a social dimension to Girls Chess Night that differs from other activities hosted by MCCL.  The girls enjoyed just catching up and being together to talk and play chess.  They also enjoyed the yummy appetizers provided by Taziki’s!

To further demonstrate its commitment to promoting girls playing chess, the MCCL Board of Directors has appointed Beena Chopade as Girls Chess Coordinator.  Beena has twin girls who attend Columbia Elementary in Madison who play chess competitively.  Beena will help coordinate and lead activities to grow the number of girls playing chess, including Girls Chess Night.

Will Girls Chess Night continue?  Yes!  We would first like to thank Madison Taziki’s for helping us launch and sponsor the event in the summer.  We are happy to announce that Taziki’s will continue to sponsor Girls Chess Night in the summers, so we will be back next June.  Further Taziki’s has agreed to sponsor two Spirit Nights for the Madison City Chess League in 2015.  The first one will be Tuesday, August 4th, from 5-8 p.m. just before school starts in Madison!  Be sure to mention you are there for MCCL when you place your food order.  The first Tuesday of the month is also ChessKid Night, so kids bring your iPads or tablets on August 4th and play Fast Chess games online while you eat.

We are also pleased to announce a new sponsor for Girls Chess Night during the school year—IHOP located at 8622 US Highway 72 West NW, MADISON, AL 35758 (next to Chili’s).  Girls Chess Night will begin meeting for the fall semester at the Madison IHOP on Tuesday September 1st from 6-7:30 p.m.  This location during the school year and competition chess season will enable the girls to receive some instruction and practice their chess skills in a back room separate from the main area of the restaurant.

After the competition season is over and time off in May, we look forward to returning to Taziki’s for our more casual summer edition of Girls Chess Night in June 2016.
