Madison Teams Win 1st Place in Every Section of Central Alabama Scholastic Chess Tournament
September 5-6, 2015 - Samford University - Birmingham
Teams across the State of Alabama from Mobile, Trussville, Birmingham and Madison competed over Labor Day weekend in three sections of the Central Alabama Scholastic Chess Tournament: Pawn (K-4), Knight (K-8) and Rook (K-12). Teams from Madison City Schools won 1st place in every section! Students from Madison also won many individual awards.
In the Rook (K-12) section designed for high school competitors, Discovery Middle School won 1st place beating teams from Hoover High and Mobile. DMS team members were: Hayden Billmann, Josh Lin, Alex Edwards, and William Spanier. Liberty Middle School came in 3rd place with team members: Vishay Ram, Carson Boland, Dheeraj Edulakanti, and Kane Stone.
In the Knight (K-8) section designed for upper elementary and middle school competitors, Rainbow Elementary won 1st place with the team of Boone Ramsey, Maanasi Limaye, Constance Wang, and Victor Lundy. In the Pawn (K-4) section for primary elementary students, Rainbow Elementary also won 1st place with the team of Geon Park, Zachary Calinsky, Karsten Wallace, and Rachael Ehrman. Also competing for Rainbow were Edward Calinsky, Perrin Larkin, Catrina Holschen and Corinne Wilhelm. Rainbow Elementary student Jenson Wilhelm competed in the adult Reserve section.
Numerous students also won trophies and medals during the Individual competition on Saturday. In the Pawn (K-4) section, Geon Park won 1st place, Karsten Wallace won 3rd, and Zachary Calinsky won 4th. In the Knight (K-8) section, Constance Wang won 2nd place and Boone Ramsey won 4th place. In the Rook (K-12) section, DMS students Josh Lin won 1st, Alex Edwards won 4th, and Hayden Billmann won 5th place.
