Madison Mayor Troy Trulock announced today that the City of Madison will hold its first Annual City Chess Championship for students residing in Madison in grades K-12 in the Spring 2016.  Each Champion of four different scholastic sections will receive $100 cash prize sponsored by Systems Products Solutions, Inc.  Mayor Trulock and a representative from SPS, Inc. stopped by Taziki's and the Girls Chess Night event to share the good news.

Five qualifying tournaments will determine who will be invited to compete in the City Chess Championship.  Follow this link to learn more about the qualifying process.

The first qualifying tournament will be the Madison City Schools Fall Scholars Tournament to be held at Heritage Elementary on Saturday August 29, 2015.  The MCS Fall Scholars Tournament is only open to students of Madison City Schools who are in good standing.  Only those students competing in the Championship section of the MCS Fall Scholars Tournament can qualify for the City Chess Championship.

The second qualifying tournament for the City Chess Championship will be the Queen's Quest to be held at Mill Creek Elementary on November 21st.

The time control for the City Chess Championship for all age groups will be 90 minutes per side with a five second delay. That means each game could last over three hours each.  The City Championship games have longer time controls to help students prepare for the National chess tournament season where games can last as long as four hours.
