MCCL Kids Win Many Awards at the 2016 Elementary Nationals!
The National Elementary Chess Championship occurred May 6-8th at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel and Convention Center. Over 2200 students from across the United States competed in multiple divisions over the three-day weekend. Alabama sent 54 students to compete in this tournament, and 42 were members of the Madison City Chess League.
Each student played seven rounds over three days. Each game can last up to 4 hours because of the longer time controls at national tournaments. Therefore, a number of these games lasted past our kids’ normal bedtimes. The final day and the last two rounds of the championship occurred on Mother’s Day, and there were many mothers present supporting their kids throughout the day.
