You have seen both adults and kids wearing the maroon Madison City Chess League shirts around town and at chess tournaments.  There is a story about the design of the MCCL logo and the shirt design that is now shared by all Madison City School students.  You will see all MCCL students wear their maroon shirts on Saturday of a two-day or three-day tournament.  It is a great feeling to have all of our kids wear the same shirt from Madison one day of a multi-day event and take a group photo. 

You will also notice that the MCCL design is now shared among all Madison schools, with a different color for each school.  Whether one is wearing Rainbow red, Heritage yellow, or Columbia lime green, one can recognize the MCCL design and feel connected to each other.  We all root for each other when we compete against schools from other cities.  "I wanted all of our Madison kids to feel a sense of solidarity when we compete in tournaments by sharing a shirt design, while still being distinct in color."  said Executive Director Ranae Bartlett.  Even if we do not recognize everyone's face who competes at a chess tournament, we can definitely recognize a Madison student.

The MCCL logo was designed by Madison art teacher and coach for Heritage and Mill Creek Elementary, Noel Newquist.  Mr. Newquist describes his design in this way:  "One thing that has always bothered me about chess in pop culture is how often artists portray chess boards with pieces randomly placed in positions that are often illegal by chess rules.  I wanted the MCCL logo to include every piece, show checkmate on the board, and be a position that could actually occur in a real chess game.  I chose to make all the pieces one color (except the White king of course) in order to emphasize how important teamwork is to MCCL.  In the logo, Black’s knight, bishop, rook, and queen are all working together to win the game."
